What is Stuttering?

What is Stuttering?

Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by repetition of words, sounds or syllables, pauses in speech, or uneven speech rate.

There are many possible causes of stuttering. Some of them are related to physiological disorders, while severe emotional trauma can also cause stuttering in a psychological sense.

Stuttering can occur in children or adults of any age. It is most common during the language development period between 2-6 years of age.

Is stuttering a disease?

Stuttering is not a disease. It is a problem that can be controlled. The goal should be to be successful in communication and increase fluency.

What should we do when we realize that our child stutters?

Children usually do not realize that they stutter. Do not draw their attention to their stuttering. We should not give warnings such as "Stop and try again", "Think before you speak", "Speak more slowly". We should listen carefully and patiently to what the child says and not focus on how he/she says it.

Who can help us in this regard?

We can get help from a speech and language therapist who has experience with this issue in children and adults.
