What is Depression?
Depression is a mood disorder that can interfere with the continuity of daily activities and negatively affect how a person feels, thinks and behaves. Symptoms such as being in a state of constant sadness, not enjoying activities that used to bring pleasure and not being able to do daily tasks can be observed.
Although there is no specific cause of depression, it has been observed that psychological, biological and social factors can cause depression. It is normal for individuals to experience emotional ups and downs from time to time, but the persistence of these ups and downs, the prolonged feeling of unhappiness and the negative consequences in daily life are an indication that the person should seek help.
Symptoms include loss of appetite or overeating, feeling tired all the time, stagnation in movement and speech, sleep problems, changes in daily life, sexual reluctance, postponing responsibilities, decreased self-esteem, focusing problems, suicidal tendencies.
There are also subtypes of depression. These include major depression, dysthymia, premenstrual dysphoria, drug-induced depression and unspecified depressive disorder.
The prevalence in women is twice as high as in men. If the symptoms have been persistent for a long time, it is best to consult a psychiatrist in order to make a diagnosis and start the right process.
