What is self-compassion and how to develop it?

Self-compassion is conceptually a state of self-appreciation that develops with actions that increase the physical, psychological and spiritual development of the individual, that is, self-compassion is the ability of individuals to be friends with themselves in difficult times. Self-compassion is the understanding, kindness and compassion that we show to another individual or our loved one who is going through a bad time with an appropriate style and tone of voice, and to be able to show it to our own inner voice with the same style and tone of voice.

Although self-compassion and self-respect seem very similar, they are different concepts. Self-esteem is defined as giving importance to ourselves, accepting ourselves and respecting our strengths and weaknesses. Self-compassion, on the other hand, is based on a tolerant attitude towards ourselves and our mistakes. Self-compassion replaces feelings of judgment, shame, anger and guilt with kindness and understanding.

Self-compassion is a concept that can be developed through actions.

For this to happen:

  • Developing mindfulness: Self-compassion is important to be able to notice the critical and negative thoughts you have about yourself. Being able to observe how you talk to your inner voice.
  • Appreciating your achievements and rewarding yourself for what you have accomplished is an important step in developing self-compassion.
  • Being aware of your own limits, prioritizing your own limits.
  • Speaking gently to our own inner voice
  • Rewarding yourself with things you love
  • Regular meditation and breathing exercises
  • Establishing and practicing a daily routine
  • Doing sports
